Introspection
Introspection For Leaders
In this workbook, we practice introspection through journaling. Given my experience journaling for over two decades, I walk you through exercises that all you to gain insights into your quality of life. Most people never stop to consider that they never get their time or energy back after they do anything - yet time and energy are the most important currencies that you have.
As I write frequently on Executive Decisions, leaders must excel themselves. Good leaders commit to being better, which is a fancy term that means, "Quality of life and actions improve."
Whitney's Self Induced Pain
I met Whitney as a fellow sales leader for our company in college. While Whitney loved her life, she was missing a key piece and it impacted how she led.
"I feel jealousy about some of the people I lead moving forward in their love lives," she told me one evening. "I don't get it. Why am I not succeeding here?"
I knew Whitney had built upon her introspective skills by keeping a journal. I challenged her to enhance her daily thoughts around her challenge. I recommended two exercises that she do. She completed the exercises daily with intensity, which is a reflection to the go-getter nature of her.
When she experienced an opportunity with a date, she reacted how many people react without reflection. Because she and I had known each other for a while, I asked her if her reaction aligned with my exercises for her that she had been journaling.
She felt floored. She saw the disconnect. Although she'll claim that I'm a big part of why she's happily married with four kids, she's actually the reason why. He introspective nature through journaling allowed her to later see a misalignment. Journaling also taught her to accept other people's challenges. Because she did the work, she could see my point.
I love her story because it reminds me that when you do the work, you enrich yourself.
Readers will enrich themselves by stepping through exercises in this workbook and doing the work. Before we look at some of what I've gained from journaling over two decades, let's look at who should avoid this workbook.
Who Shouldn't Buy This Workbook
This workbook requires effort on your part. You cannot passively read this and gain anything from the workbook. You must do the work.
If you want to passively read about journaling, this workbook is not for you. Likewise, if you don't want to do the work, then this workbook is not for you.
This workbook also requires critical thought with self-honesty. Why I think digital tools can be helpful, I've found that this is only true for people who first consider patterns themselves. If you want to outsource your critical thought to computers, you will lose these skills over time.
People who do the critical thought first after their work will get the most from this workbook. In my view, you shouldn't be in leadership if you don't want to apply and practice critical thought.
You should not buy this workbook if you want to avoid thinking about what you've written over time.
How Journaling Added Life To My Years
I have kept a journal for over two decades, starting in elementary school. Some of the results I've gotten from keeping a regular journal:
- Health. I identified how a specific illness cost me an average of 34 days per year. Initially, I had rejected that this illness cost me that much. But with journaling correctly, I saw clearly the impact it had - I was losing 34 days per year. I spent time researching and finding a cure for the illness. I have not experienced it again.
- Growth. I learned through experience and reflection why most content about growth is wrong. I saw the costs to myself through reflection.
- Relationships. I identified how I applied poor advice in relationships (friendships, family, etc). Through reflecting over my experienced, I saved countless wasted hours by realizing how to easily identify people who knew through experience.
- Leisure. While it took a decade, I saw the importance of leisure and how to tune the nob for my life - plus how I could sense this with other people and understand some of their beliefs and actions.
- Leadership. I never wanted to lead, but with help from journaling over many years, I saw clearly where I enjoyed leading and where I did not. This alone resulted in a significant reduction of stress, plus a useful skill of leveraging strength.
A journal helps with your challenges. You may save huge amounts of time, like I did by saving 34 days a year. Or, you may quintuple your income in two years. Or you may recognize what you actually value in people and meet the person of your dreams while being part of a community that you enjoy. Or, you may achieve other goals or dreams that you have.
A journal - when done correctly - can be a useful tool that saves you time and energy (life) on your life's journey. Our time and energy never return. They are lost forever once used. A journal guides you over time to highlight where to use both appropriately.
